Of Mice and Men

Rabbit on a Stick... made me laugh.

Rabbit on a Stick...

Coolest. Lab. Ever. Apparently it doesn’t take much to amuse me (or perhaps it’s that odd things amuse me), but one of our recent labs in Mammalogy was learning how to make a museum specimen from a mouse, i.e. skinning it and stuffing it, and I loved it.

The lab was optional, and more than half our lab opted out. I wasn’t sure how I was going to manage the skinning of a mouse, but seeing as how I want to be a veterinarian, for crying out loud, you’d think I’d be able to manage.

Fortunately, the meecies were already dead, victims of some prior lab experiment and recycled for our benefit. At least they were recycled, since I don’t really like the fact that a critter had to die for me to learn something, but that’s an inevitable consequence of veterinary medicine, methinks. I named mine Horace.

The Price of Dedication

Boo hoo hoo! Today I canceled my Netflix subscription, the one I’ve had for ages and LOVE LOVE LOVE(D).

Sadly, I have had the same movie waiting for me to watch since I started school. When you’re hitting the books every single night, there just ain’t time for movies.

*sniff* I’ll really miss you, Netflix. We’ll meet again someday.

Leaving a Legacy

So I have this favorite lunching spot on campus, a rock tucked in a small ring of large blue spruce trees. On the rock is a plaque that reads:

“This silver spruce living memorial presented to Colorado State University by the Class of 1910.”

I’ve often pondered who those people were, all of whom are surely gone by now, and what legacy they might have left.

At first I thought, wow, what if someone’s only legacy was to have been part of the Class of 1910 and donated a few cents to the tree memorial?

And then I thought, yikes, at least they have trees to show for themselves. What’s my legacy?

Through the Gauntlet (At Least the First Part)

Well, kids, I did it. The vet school application is in with less than 24 hours to spare. I really MEANT to get it done much sooner. *sigh* And I thought the GRE was bad. This application process has reduced me to a driveling mess!

About a year or so ago, I started recording some of my experiences in narrative format, thinking I might be using them someday on my vet school application. Turns out nothing in my application came from those early efforts, but I do think it was a useful exercise, because I’m pretty pleased with the way my essays turned out. (And some of those early essays have turned into this blog.)

So, here are my tips for those of you who are crazy enough to want to go through this process sometime in the future: Read the rest of this entry »
