My First Tooth Extraction

Alternate title: Clindamycin all around!

As you may remember from this post, I was not looking forward to dragging Mr. Tabby out of his comfortable closet to the vet for a dental cleaning, but I suspected it needed to be done. Turns out I had good reason to be wary, and good reason to suspect his teeth were really bad…

When I went to scoop him up, Mr. T. went ballistic. As in, I have never in my life seen a cat that freaked out. He raced around the room, bounced off the walls (literally!), and attempted to sink his teeth into whatever part of my body was closest. He got my hand and my calf pretty well–my finger was gushing blood and I felt like someone had whacked the back of my leg with a hammer. $(%*!!

Mr. T’s mouth had blood on it, too. At first I wondered whether it was mine, but it soon became clear that he was bleeding pretty well himself. That only strengthened my resolve to get him in the cat carrier, since his teeth must have been really infected for him to be bleeding like that. I cornered him, got a good scruff, and lowered him, butt first, into the carrier. Phew.

Check out that tartar.

That’s when I glanced at the floor, and there, in a little puddle of blood, was HIS CANINE TOOTH!

My poor boy! Eesh, I can’t even imagine the amount of pain he must have been in ever since that thing started rotting. And if that one fell out on its own, there were bound to be others just as bad.

I left him at the vet and dragged myself to the nearest clinic for a tetanus shot and clindamycin. With no appointment, this complex medical procedure took three hours. Ugh. I did find it pretty amusing that the 150mg clindamycin capsules I got from the local pharmacy were exactly the same as the ones we have in the clinic.

As for Mr. T., he was under anesthesia for two and a half hours, and had about 10 more teeth pulled. He’ll probably need more pulled later, but at least the worst ones are gone.

You don't need to be a vet to see how rotten these are.

Oh, he also got his own clindamycin prescription. And my 1st cat, Mandu, is already taking clindamycin for her skin infection. Clindamycin for everybody!

I was really worried that Mr. T. would never forgive me for this traumatic incident, but he is back home, recovering, and actually seems to be slightly more snuggly than he was before the horrorfest. Well, as snuggly as he can be from the shelf in the back of the closet.
